Haynes Publishing Group

When I was hired as the art director for Maui Nō Ka ‘Oi magazine, it was the only title the publisher had. As the Kā‘anapali and Island Living magazines were added to the roster, it became necessary to develop an umbrella identity for Haynes Publishing Group. Modeled after the kahili, a feather-adorned staff carried by Hawaiian royalty, the logo also mirrors pages of an open book with orange sun rays emanating from the binding. The base graphic is also an abstraction of a palm leaf. As a derivative of the orange in the logo, a warm brown was chosen as a neutral color for most of the collateral to set a rich base tone and to allow the media kit and magazines to pop.
