John Giordani

Art Director, Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Writer

Maui Nō Ka ‘Oi Magazine

As the creative director, I led the art department of this bimonthly for 10 years (the last two remotely from New York). Duties included: art direction, photography, photo editing and retouching, graphic and production design. It is distributed via national newsstand, subscription and in-room placement at almost all of the islandʻs resort hotels. My first month on the job, I redesigned the brand along with the magazine. I worked closely with editors and writers to set the proper visual tones to stories that ranged from culturally-sensitive to tourist interest. For a few years I had an assistant that became my design associate and helped with varied tasks including expanding the publisherʻs inventory of publications from one to four. I also worked closely with the fashion editor to produce two 6–8 page fashion stories per year. Cover selection was based on overall appeal and previous sales metrics. We sought to alternate between ocean-oriented and landscape-based images. I also planned out the pagination of every issue working with the sales department to ensure proper ad placement. I provided art direction on home, fashion, dining and adventure photo shoots.
